Description of issue

There's not much to say.

imho search should not fail on cask that requires newer version of os that i have, and i don't even have the cask installed.

$ brew search top
Error: Cask 'desktop-composer' definition is invalid: invalid 'depends_on macos' value: unknown or unsupported macOS version: :"26"

Your Homebrew version is quite behind the latest version which is - https://github.com/Homebrew/brew/releases/tag/5.1.3

4.5.2 was released in May last year, so it is expected that up to date taps may not work with version as they may have features not available in the version of Homebrew that you have installed.

@glensc You seem to be running nix-homebrew, which will never be supported, for the reason I mention here. Your Nix-managed Homebrew version is even older than the OP that triggered the above thread, so you should not be surprised at simple things not working; a LOT has changed under the hood since then.

I didn't feel like nix pinned brew version, as it appeared brew itself was updated (I recall seeing messages updating brew and it's changelog).

Fixed with a reinstall of brew:

$ sudo rm /opt/homebrew/bin/brew
$ /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"
[...]
$ which brew
/opt/homebrew/bin/brew
$ brew --version
Homebrew 5.1.3
